Plant Details & Care

Maxillaria tenuifolia

Common Name: Coconut Orchid

Overview

Maxillaria tenuifolia is a beloved epiphytic orchid species celebrated for its uniquely fragrant blooms, which emit a distinct coconut aroma when in flower. Native to regions of Central America, including Mexico, Belize, and Nicaragua, this species produces striking red to burgundy flowers that contrast beautifully against its grassy, reed-like foliage. Blooming typically occurs in late spring to early summer, with multiple flowers emerging from mature pseudobulbs, creating a vibrant and sensory display.

Care Requirements

Light:

Bright, indirect light to partial shade. Tolerates slightly higher light than many orchids and benefits from gentle morning sun.

Water:

Water thoroughly when the growing medium approaches dryness. Allow for slight drying between waterings, especially in cooler months.

Humidity:

Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Good air circulation is essential to prevent rot and fungal issues.

Temperature:

Warm-growing species. Ideal temperatures range from 60–85°F. Can tolerate brief dips into the upper 50s°F.

Growing Medium:

Performs well in a well-draining orchid mix such as bark with perlite or mounted on cork or tree fern for more advanced growers.

Growth Habit

A sympodial epiphyte producing closely spaced pseudobulbs topped with narrow, grass-like leaves. Plants tend to form dense clumps over time and can be grown in pots, baskets, or mounted displays.

Bloom Characteristics

Flowers are star-shaped, approximately 1.5–2 inches across, with rich red to maroon tones often accented by subtle spotting. The signature coconut fragrance is strongest during the warmest part of the day, making this species a favorite among collectors.

Pollinators

In its native habitat, flowers are thought to attract small insects drawn to scent cues, though it is primarily grown for ornamental enjoyment in cultivation.

Houseplant / Balcony Suitability

Excellent for patios, balconies, and bright indoor spaces with adequate humidity. A great choice for orchid enthusiasts seeking both fragrance and ease of care.

Notes for Growers

  • Slight drying between waterings encourages healthy root development.

  • Benefits from regular fertilization during active growth.

  • Repot or divide when clumps become crowded to maintain vigor.

Plants slightly vary in size. Bloom is for reference.
