Cheilocostus speciosus 'Red Stem'
This is a beautiful red-stemmed form of crepe ginger, Cheilocostus speciosus, that we brought back from Singapore. This species grows well in Florida and has a very wide geographic range with different forms in different places. It forms a clump of red-stemmed canes branching and spreading near the top and can reach 6 ft or more in height. When mature the tall stems are topped by inflorescences with dark wine-red bracts and pale lilac flowers. It does best in part shade to full sun but needs supplemental water during dry periods.
