Callicarpa americana, beautyberry, is one of our most beautiful native shrubs. It is fast-growing and can reach 8 feet in height, but looks best if it is cut back during May or June to encourage new growth. Clusters of tiny pink flowers encircle the stems at the leaf axils are produced in the Summer followed by vibrant clusters of bright purple fruits which remain on the plant for several months. The flowers attract bees and other pollinators and the fruits are a favorite of native birds. As an added bonus, an extract from the leaves known as ‘callicarpenal’ is a proven and effective mosquito repellant! Beautyberry may be grown in full sun to light shade.
