Alpinia zerumbet

Shell ginger is a beautiful and easy ornamental from tropical Asia. It forms a clump of stems with broad glossy green leaves. Inflorescences arch over and droop. They are made up of flowers with a white calyx with pink tips surrounding a lower petal which is yellow with purple-red streaks. It is a fast growing ginger that needs full sun to light shade in well draining soil with extra water during dry periods. The leaves are aromatic and sometimes used to wrap rice or fish during cooking. (Pot size: 3 gallon)
