Bitterbush is a small, understory native tree found in the Tropical Rockland Hammocks of South Florida. It is a slow grower and reaches a height between 10 to 15 feet. Picramnia pentandra is dioecious with the main flowering period from June-August. The inconspicuous flowers are arranged in long pendulous spikes; fruits are round, ripen red, then black. Fruits are scattered by birds and the tree volunteers readily in disturbed, shady sites. Prefers dappled sun to partial shade and well-draining soil. Listed as endangered. (Pot size: 3 gallon)
