Native to the southeastern United States, 'Scarlet Rosemallow' is a tall herbaceous perennial that can reach an average height of 6 to 9 feet. It has an upright growth habit, forming clumps of sturdy stems. The plant produces large, palmate leaves that are dark green and have a rough texture. The most striking feature of Hibiscus coccineus is its brilliant scarlet red flowers, which are large and showy. Each flower has a prominent central column of stamens and a stigma, further enhancing its visual appeal. The blossoms attract pollinators like hummingbirds and butterflies. 'Scarlet Rosemallow' typically blooms from mid to late summer, extending into early fall. It becomes dormant during winter, however, it regrows from the base in the following spring. Hibiscus coccineus thrives in full sun to partial shade, preferring moist to wet soil conditions. It is well-suited for gardens with moist or wet areas, such as near ponds, streams, or in rain gardens. The plant is relatively adaptable and can tolerate a range of soil types.
