Heliconia subulata is the most southerly occurring species in the family and perhaps the most cold tolerant. In southern Florida, it seems to be in perpetual bloom. The leaves are gray-green and sturdy. The long lasting inflorescence is presented above the leaves but occasionally on separate, leafless stems. They are attractive, long lasting as cut flowers. The stems can grow to 7 ft or more. It prefers full sun to part shade and may need supplemental irrigation during dry periods. (Pot size: 2 gallon)
