This rare and beautiful ginger is more of a delicate collector plant and not a general purpose landscape plant in South Florida. Burbidgea pauciflora is endemic to the island of Borneo and a member of the Zingiberaceae, or ginger family. The showy orange flowers rise above the glossy green foliage and produce and appear sporadically during the year. Mature plants reach a height of 2 feet. It can handle bright shade to filtered sun and requires moist, well-drained soil. It may not tolerate alkaline soil and alkaline irrigation water for long periods. Rain water or RO may be necessary for long-term success in South Florida, though growing in a container with a more acidic substrate may compensate for slightly alkaline water for a time.
