Zamia integrifolia, the coontie, is Florida's only native cycad. Coonties grow to only about a foot and a half tall and are listed by the state of Florida as a threatened species. This is the preferred larval food of the beautiful Atala hairstreak butterfly. The thick, starchy underground stem was an important food source for indigenous Florida Indians as well as early European settlers. This very slow-growing species will do best in full sun but larger plants can be installed in light shade. A Native Plant Network species! (Pot size: 1 gallon)
