Helicteres jamaicensis

Helicteres jamaicensis, commonly known as 'Screwtree' is a medium shrub that can be kept at 5 to 10 feet or a small tree that can reach a height between 10 to 20 feet. It is native to the Caribbean and a member of the family Malvaceae. The leaves are large, ovate and tomentose (covered with wooly hairs). 'Screwtree' produces a unique white flower and a tomentose fruit capsule that twists spirally at maturity, hence its common name. Prefers semi-shade to full sun and well draining soil.
