Chaya is a fast growing tropical shrub or small tree that can reach a height of up to 20 ft. The leaves are a popular leafy green vegetable in Central America and are also used medicinally to treat a variety of illnesses. The leaves however should not be eaten raw, as they contain a toxin similar to cyanide. The poison is neutralized by boiling the leaves for 5-15 minutes before consumption. The small white flowers will attract bees and butterflies to your garden. Prefers full to partial sun and well-draining soil. (Pot size: 1 gallon)
