Aristolochia philippinensis

If you want very unusual flowers on display almost all the time, the “goose shaped” flowers of this unusual plant from Southeast Asia is perfect. Though nearly all Aristolochia species are vines or woody shrubs, this species is a relatively modest herbaceous plant with only a little woody thickening at the base of older plants. It forms upright or spreading shoots with attractive large leaves (for an Aristolochia) that often have purplish vein highlights on a light colored background beneath. Though it has not yet been tested much as a houseplant, we think it has great promise under similar conditions to many aroids with bright filtered light, good drainage and some humidity.
